Gilbert Melendez vs. Shinya Aoki off the table for DREAM’s Dynamite!! show on New Year’s Eve

Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez and his counterpart over at DREAM, Shinya Aoki will not meet on New Year’s Eve at the Japanese promotions Dynamite!! show after the two sides failed to agree on terms.

Strikeforce officials confirmed the news to MMAWeekly.com earlier today after months of speculation that the two would rematch on Japan’s biggest night in mixed martial arts.

Melendez was last seen in action when the two men squared off for the first time back in April, picking up a unanimous decision win on the night. He took time off after the fight to recoup his body and welcome his newest child into the world.

As for Aoki, the number one Japanese fighter picked up three wins on the bounce since failing to pick up the Strikeforce 155 pound title including a devastating submission win over Tatsuya Kawajiri in July.

UFC 125 – Phil Baroni vs. Brad Tavares finally official for January 1st in Las Vegas, Nevada

The long-rumoured middleweight contest between experienced veteran, Phil Baroni and product of “The Ultimate Fighter’s” eleventh season, Brad Tavares has today been made official for January 1st in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The fight was first mentioned over a month ago and will line up on the preliminary card portion of the promotions year end show.

Baroni will return to 185 pounds following a spell at welterweight that resulted in a loss to “Ultimate Fighter” season seven winner, Amir Sadollah last December. He has since been sidelined through injury, something that forced him out of a UFC 118 showdown with John Salter.

Tavares rebounded from a semi-final defeat on the eleventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter” to defeat fellow cast member, Seth Baczynski on the live finale in June. He has since been sidelined through injury.

Matt Mitrione dismisses the notion he’s about to leave behind his promising MMA career to join the WWE

UFC heavyweight prospect, Matt Mitrione has this week moved to dismiss the possibility that he’s about to give up a career in mixed martial arts to pursue a career in professional wrestling with the WWE, explaining he’d rather leave to join the World Wildlife Foundation.

Speaking via MMAFighting.com, Mitrione said:

“That’s such a weird situation that my name got thrown in the mix, and then after that, that Pat Barry’s name got thrown in the mix. Like, why is my training camp getting assaulted by the WWF people, man? I would much rather be leaving the UFC to go to the [World] Wildlife Foundation (ed. note: it’s actually called the World Wildlife Fund) than I would be to pseudo-fighters.”

“It might be all the dramatics I put on the show, plus I am kind of a weird cat. I don’t know, man. But I will tell you this much: I think Pat Barry and I would make one hell of a tag team wherever we’re going.”

Mitrione is next in action on the UFC Fight Night 23 card, otherwise known as UFC “Fight for the Troops”, set for January 22nd in Fort Hood, Texas where he’ll face the always tough, Tim Hague.

“I’m not in a situation or place where I can tell or ask for anyone in any kind of ranking. The fact that they are even giving me another fight is something I’m so flattered by. So I haven’t really thought about asking for people. I think I could have been putting the cart a little bit ahead of my horse last time when I said, you know, There’s some people that I would really like to fight, but I don’t know if I was really ready for them at that time.”

Mitrione has strung together a series of impressive results inside the octagon since turning pro, defeating fellow former NFL star, Marcus Jones, former street fighting icon, “Kimbo Slice” and former Bellator stand-out, Joey Beltran.

BENJI RADACH VS. LUCAS LOPES TO REPLACE SCRAPPED WALKER VS. CARSON BOUT ON DECEMBER 4 STRIKEFORCE CARD

With Heavyweight Herschel Walker forced out of his planned December 4 Strikeforce bout with WEC veteran Scott Carson due to a deep cut he sustained training with Daniel Cormier on Friday, a Middleweight scrap between Lucas Lopes and Benji Radach has been put together at the last minute to help fill in the dwindling "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu" fight card.

Earlier in the week yet-to-be matched up Jesse Finney, who was originally slated to face Scott Smith before "Hands of Steel" was instead matched up with Strikeforce newcomer Paul Daley, was forced to bow out of the event due to an eye injury.

Sources close to the situation told us Thursday that Lopes (19-10), who is one of Finney's training partners and holds a win over UFC standout Thiago Alves, has agreed to face Radach on the card. Radach (20-5), whose record includes wins over Murilo Rua and Gerald Harris, hasn't fought since being knocked out by Smith last year, but he is a crafty veteran Lopes would regret taking lightly.

Another source we spoke to informed us that Strikeforce was unable to find a suitable opponent in time for Carson, so the 4-1 veteran who was to return from a nine-year layoff from MMA to face Walker, will not be fighting on the card.

VALENTIJN OVEREEM SUFFERS ELBOW INJURY, OFF DECEMBER 4 STRIKEFORCE

Another "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu" competitor has been lost due to injury.
Valentijn Overeem, older brother of Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem, has suffered an elbow injury that has forced him off the December 4 Strikeforce card. The news was first reported by MMAweekly.com, and we have confirmed the story with sources close to the bout. Though the specific nature of Overeem’s elbow troubles remains unknown, he is reportedly awaiting the results of X-rays that will illuminate the severity of the injury.

Overeem was scheduled to face former EliteXC Heavyweight Champion Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva on the main card. No word has been given regarding a replacement for the Dutchman.

The event, which will go down at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, has now had three fighters pull out of their respective bouts. The show took two body blows earlier this week when St. Louis native Jesse Finney withdrew from his match with an eye injury and heavyweight competitor Herschel Walker was sidelined after suffering a cut under his left eye in training.

Overeem is coming off back-to-back wins. The veteran began his career back in 1996 and holds notable victories over Renato “Babalu” Sobral, Ian Freeman and five-time UFC champion Randy Couture. The Golden Glory product holds all but one of his 28 career victories by way of stoppage. His bout with Silva would have marked the 34-year-old’s Strikeforce debut.

RUMOUR – Ikuhisa Minowa set to step into the Strikeforce cage against Antonio “Big Foot” Silva

DREAM’s Super Hulk champion, Ikuhisa Minowa could be about to make the switch to the Strikeforce cage this weekend after a rumour began to circulate yesterday about the popular Japanese fighter stepping in for the injured Valentijn Overeem this Saturday night in St. Louis, Missouri.

The report first came from MiddleEasy.com, who said DREAM’s boss, Keiichi Sasahara was willing to lend the man dubbed “Minowaman” to Strikeforce, matching him up with former EliteXC heavyweight champion, Antonio “Big Foot” Silva in the process.

Minowa isn’t exactly a stranger to facing fighters who are much bigger than him after squaring off with and beating the likes of Hong Man Choi, Bob Sapp and Sokoudjou in the past couple of years. Stay tuned to MMABay for more on this as we get it.

Marshall Zelaznik dismisses the notion that the UFC are about to start splitting weight classes

UK UFC President, Marshall Zelaznik has dismissed reports that the promotion could be about to split up a number of weight classes in order to create new ones, with 195 and 225 pound divisions constantly a hot topic of conversation across the boards.

Speaking via ESPN.co.uk, Zelaznik said:

“I don’t see it happening and I think Dana has his eye on the prize for why that would be a bad thing. When you add these lower weight belts, you’re not running the risk of the boxing terrain, because you’re not splitting weight classes to create new ones. We’re just adding a few on the bottom. It would be a bigger concern if we had created a 195 weight class or something.”

“What these new divisions do is give a platform to some of the most exciting lighter weight fighters in the world. It will bolster our fight cards. You look at some of these smaller fighters, Manny Gamburyan for instance, who was fighting in the UFC before he moved to the WEC. He moved to 145 from 155, but he could possibly even go lighter. All of the fighters will look at that.”

Many fighters in the lightweight division are said to be considering a move down to 145 pounds now that the problem of switching promotions, and therefore taking a major pay cut, has been resolved once and for all. One fighter who would fit right in at featherweight is current lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar, that is if he doesn’t hang on to his title.

MIKE KYLE TO FACE ANTONIO SILVA AT "STRIKEFORCE: HENDERSON VS. BABALU"

AKA Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight Mike Kyle will step in to fight contender Antonio Silva on this Saturday's "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu" card, Strikeforce revealed Monday to MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani. Kyle replaces Valentijn Overeem, who recently pulled out of the card due to an elbow injury.

"[Kyle] talked to us about fighting at Heavyweight about a month now or six weeks, about taking bigger fights," Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said on The MMA Hour. "So we think it could be a great matchup and we're happy to put it together."

Kyle (18-7-1), who has settled in as a Light Heavyweight this year, will return to his original Heavyweight class with this fight. The UFC veteran will enter the fight undefeated in six fights (one was a no contest) since the loss to Fabricio Werdum in August 2009. Labeled a bad boy for frequent poor sportsmanship in the mid-2000s, Kyle has as of late been trying to clean up his image with wins in Strikeforce: Challengers, XMMA in Australia and several King of the Cage events.

"Bigfoot" Silva (14-2) is coming off a win over Andrei Arlovski via unanimous decision in May, evening his Strikeforce record to 1-1. Silva shares with Kyle a most recent loss to Werdum. Prior to Arlovski, Silva lost in his Strikeforce debut to the two-time ADCC grappling champ by decision.

The December 4 Strikeforce card in St. Louis, the promotion's year-end show, also features Dan Henderson vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Lindland and Paul Daley vs. Scott Smith in televised action.
