MAIQUEL FALCAO SCREWED BY THE TIMEKEEPER OUT OF A DEBUT SUBMISSION WIN AT UFC 123

It has been brought to the attention of us that Octagon newcomer, Maiquel Falcao was screwed by the timekeeper in attendance at UFC 123 this past weekend in Detroit, Michigan who cut the first round short by six seconds to prevent Gerald Harris from either tapping out or passing out.

After reviewing the footage on more than one occasion, we can confirm that the timekeeper’s clapper board sounds with ten seconds left in the round, the exact moment Falcao drops back and sinks in a rear naked choke on the helpless Harris.

Just four seconds later, with referee Dan Miragliotta keeping a close eye on the American fighter, the buzzer sounds to end the round and thus preventing the submission. This could of course explain why the Brazilian was confused and didn’t immediately let go of the submission, believing there was still time left in the round. Check out the footage for yourself and let us know what you think…

Despite UFC boss' anger, "Rampage" genuinely surprised by UFC 123 win

After a pleasant week with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and watching the former champ fight through an illness that nearly forced his withdrawal from the card, UFC president Dana White was more than a little ticked by the UFC 123 winner's post-fight behavior.

White was sure Jackson (31-8 MMA, 6-2 UFC) won the fight, yet "Rampage" acted surprised when he was declared the split-decision winner over Lyoto Machida (16-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC).

Jackson, though, maintains his surprise was genuine.

In a fight that got him back in the light-heavyweight title picture, Jackson scored just enough points to edge the elusive Machida during Saturday's pay-per-view headliner at The Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit.

But Jackson's post-fight behavior initially had White steaming.

"'Rampage' and I are getting along, but he's pissing me off again," White said after the event. "I had 'Rampage' winning that fight two rounds to one. ... I scored that fight for 'Rampage.' He is slumping down and holding up the other guy's hand and acting like he lost. I thought he won."

However, Jackson, who's been known to goof off in even the most serious situations, said he was still reeling from Machida's late-fight rally.

"I just got done getting punched in the face a couple times," he said. "Don't pay me no mind.

"My trainers are in there and told me I won the fight. But when I was in the fight, I just had a one-track mind to knock him out. In the third round, he came at me so much, I forget what happened in the first two rounds. ... It's one of those things where at the time I thought I was getting my ass whooped because I was just on the ground taking a flurry to my face."

Jackson, fighting for the first time since falling short in a No. 1 contender's bout with Rashad Evans earlier this year, needed the win in a big way. With current champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Evans expected to clash in March, the rest of the division is jockeying for top-contender spots.

But despite his big win, "Rampage" almost never made it to the cage.

"None of you guys know this, but this fight was almost canceled a few days ago because I caught a fever from my son and was throwing up and everything and had to cut weight," he said. "I was like, 'I almost didn't make it to the fight.' But I didn't want to let my fans down. I really wanted to come in and do everything I had and give it my all since Detroit was so pumped for this fight."

As fuel for the fight, Jackson channeled his former PRIDE days. With his raw power and trademark slams, he once was one of the biggest stars of the now-defunct Japanese organization. But Jackson admittedly lost some motivation once he joined the UFC in 2007. He didn't have the fire in his belly.

So, as a tribute to his glory days, Jackson entered the cage at UFC 123 with traditional PRIDE music. He said it fueled him for the bout.

"I remember PRIDE," Jackson said. "Everyone knew me and loved me. I used to fight for honor and respect. Now I come to the UFC, and I make way more money than I did in PRIDE, so I got a little greedy and fighting for the dollars and stuff. So I wanted to come out to PRIDE (music) and get that old PRIDE spirit. I felt like some of it kind of came back. I even tried to slam Machida."

Now, with three full rounds of cage experience with Machida, Jackson has a new outlook on the Brazilian. In the buildup to the fight, he continually blasted Machida's style as boring and criticized his elusiveness.

Jackson still doesn't enjoy the fighting style, but he's not going to question its effectiveness.

"It's different fighting than Machida than watching Machida," he said. "I have more respect for his style. I wish I could move like that. I have more respect for his style.

"But I still don't want to watch it."

Condivido. Davis non fa lay and pray.
Su Jones e Machida mi accodo a HCTP.

Shane Carwin unfollowed and blocked on Twitter by the UFC, asks for the numbers of Scott Coker and Bjorn Rebney

In an interesting twist this week, UFC heavyweight knockout artist, Shane Carwin has been unfollowed and blocked on Twitter by the Las Vegas based promotion, something that prompted him to ask for the numbers of rival promotions CEO’s, Scott Coker and Bjorn Rebney.

The following was posted on his own Twitter account in the past few hours:

Last month Carwin publically blasted the UFC for banning the GOOD4U drinks brand as a sponsor, something that has seemingly raised the ire of the promotion. Although I can’t see them ditching him like they did Todd Duffee, the man mountain can expect larger repercussions than a block on Twitter heading his way.

UFC 127 – Jon Fitch on facing B.J Penn: “You’ve got to beat a legend to become a legend”

UFC welterweight contender, Jon Fitch has spoken for the first time about the news he’ll face former lightweight champion, B.J. Penn at UFC 127 on February 27th in Sydney, Australia, explaining it’s fantasic for him and gives him a chance to establish his own legacy.

Speaking via USA Today, Fitch said:

“I’m surprised that they switched opponents, but I’m glad they did. I think it’s an awesome match-up, I think it’s an awesome fight, I think the fans are going to be very happy about this. I’m very happy to get a chance to headline a card. BJ’s a legend. He is. He’s been around for so long and everybody knows who BJ is. This is my, I guess, second opportunity to fight a legend. GSP was probably the first one. You’ve got to beat a legend to become a legend, so this is a great opportunity for that. … I really want the belt. I want a belt. That’s why we’re in this game. I don’t want to be the Dan Marino of MMA. “Oh yeah, he was a great fighter, but he never won the belt.” I want the belt.”

Fitch was originally due to face powerhouse wrestler, Jake Ellenberger three weeks prior at UFC 126 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The promotion decided to split that fight up and hand the American Kickboxing Academy star a much more high profile affair with the possible reward of a title shot hanging in the balance.

PAUL DALEY WANTS TO FIGHT KJ NOONS AFTER KNOCKING OUT SCOTT SMITH

Paul Daley is readying for his return to Strikeforce next weekend when he faces Scott Smith in a marquee match-up on the card, but the explosive Brit already has his eyes set on a future fight with KJ Noons. While Daley has no illusions of looking past Scott Smith, the former UFC Welterweight contender is gunning for a shot at the Strikeforce 170lbs belt now and an opportunity to face champion Nick Diaz.
The path to get to the title is where things get sticky. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker had previously told MMAWeekly Radio that internal talks were to put the winner of Daley vs. Smith in with Brazilian slugger Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos with the eventual victor becoming the new No. 1 contender in the Welterweight Division. It seems that Daley has other ideas in mind.

“Obviously first it’s Scott Smith, to get him out of the picture pretty quick, and then really I just want to take the biggest names that Strikeforce has on the route to the title or the people that I think that are going to present me with the most challenge,” Daley said on Tuesday.

“Without being disrespectful Cyborg or to Mr. Coker, I don’t think a fight with Cyborg is something that I’m looking for at the moment to be honest with you.”

Daley does have other names in mind, including the man who holds a win over Diaz and just recently went 5 round with the current Strikeforce Welterweight Champion.

“I’d rather fight KJ Noons or Nick Diaz straight away or a Tyron Woodley, who’s really not a bigger name, but I respect him and think that a fight with him will not only be a challenge for me, but will also be an exciting fight and a fight Strikeforce can promote,” Daley commented.

Santos hasn’t competed since a June TKO win over Marius Zaromskis, but has been mentioned as a possible title contender since dropping down to Welterweight. KJ Noons has been taking time off since his fight with Diaz and there has been no word if the pro boxer and MMA fighter will make a return to Lightweight or stay at Welterweight in the near future. If Daley has his way, Noons will be at 170 and fighting him very soon.

“Ideally, I’d like to fight Noons after I knock out Scott Smith,” Daley stated.

Daley will first face Scott Smith in St. Louis next weekend and then await Strikeforce’s final decision on who he’ll have to go through to get to a title shot against Nick Diaz.

CESAR GRACIE OPEN TO JASON "MAYHEM" MILLER VS. NICK DIAZ ON JANUARY 29, CATCHWEIGHT REQUIRED

If trainer Cesar Gracie gets his way, Strikeforce Welterweight Champion and prized pupil Nick Diaz (23-7 MMA, 4-0 SF) finally will meet Jason "Mayhem" Miller (24-7 MMA, 1-1 SF) in early 2011. The goal is for the fight to take place at a currently unannounced January 29 Strikeforce event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
But as Gracie told MMAjunkie.com Radio on Monday, the champ won't move up a weight class to get the fight booked.

"I was talking to Strikeforce a little bit about it today," said Gracie, a finalist for "Trainer of the Year" in the 2010 World MMA Awards. "No opponent has been named or anything. But he's going to fight on that date, and hopefully Fedor (Emelianenko) will be part of it too. It could be a really exciting time."

What would make it even more exciting is Diaz vs. Miller. But Gracie said it's still a work in progress.

"That fight just hasn't been offered to us like in an official manner yet," he said. "I know 'Mayhem' goes on his websites and (says) Nick is ducking him and everything. It's kind of hard to duck someone when you haven't even been offered the fight. It's just 'Mayhem' talking about that. Until it's been offered, you can't say yes or no."

Gracie said he hadn't talked to Diaz about the fight but will in the next fight days. Besides, it hasn't even really been offered. But Gracie said if it's a fight Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker wants, they'll take it. But it won't be in Miller's Middleweight Division.

"If that fight was offered, yeah, we'd probably take that fight," he said. "We'd just have to look at what weight class it's going to be in, and apparently, 'Mayhem' can't make 170. We're not going to accommodate going to 185. It doesn't really make that much sense to call someone out, and the champ has to ... go to your weight class."

Instead, Gracie prefers the fight to take place right in the middle – at 178 pounds, which is within a few pounds of where Diaz previously met Frank Shamrock and Scott Smith in Strikeforce Catchweight bouts.
Currently, Diaz is training for marathons and keeping the weight off. And besides, though he's receptive to the bout, Gracie said Miller hasn't accomplished much in his recent bouts and really is in a win-win situation regardless of the outcome of a fight with Diaz, who's riding an eight-fight win streak.

"Being the champ of 'Bully Beatdown' doesn't really make you a contender," said Gracie, referring to Miller's MTV reality show. "It doesn't. If he were beating people that's important, yeah. But the champ doesn't need to move or down in weight because someone says, 'Don't be scared, homie.'"

The Diaz and Miller feud reached a boiling point back in April at the now-infamous "Strikeforce: Nashville" event. After teammate Jake Shields defeated Dan Henderson in the headliner, Miller, who picked up a win earlier in the night, entered the cage to demand a rematch with the then-Middleweight champ. The confrontation didn't go over well with Shields and his teammates, including Diaz, who soon were part of a wild in-cage melee that marred the CBS-televised event.
Diaz and Miller both have barked about a possible fight since then.

JOSE' ALDO FORCED OUT OF UFC 125 BOUT WITH JOSH GRISPI DUE TO INJURY

Just days after he was awarded the new UFC Featherweight Title by Dana White, Josè Aldo has been forced to pull out of his scheduled UFC 125 title defense against Josh Grispi due to an undisclosed injury. Heavy MMA first reported the news on Tuesday afternoon, and MMA Fighting has confirmed it with sources.

Aldo (18-1), the final WEC Featherweight Champion, most recently defeated Manny Gamburyan in September. He captured the 145-pound title in November 2009 when he defeated Mike Brown via second round TKO.

Grispi (14-1) was supposed to fight Erik Koch at WEC 52 earlier this month, but was pulled from that fight card following the announcement of the UFC-WEC merger in October.

No word on which bout will replace Aldo-Grispi as the UFC 125 co-main event. UFC 125 is scheduled for Januar 1 in Las Vegas. The event, which will air live on Pay-Per-View, will be headlined by Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard for the UFC Lightweight Title.

California State Athletic Commission set to dismiss Chael Sonnen’s excuse for testing positive for steroids

Just when he thought he might be in with a chance of overturning or at least getting a reduced sentence for failing his UFC 117 pre-fight drugs test, middleweight Chael Sonnen is set to have his latest excuse blown out of the water by the California State Athletic Commission.

Speaking via MMAFA.tv, George Todd of the CSAC said:

“When anybody is on any type of medication or anything like that they are required to provide physical documentation prior to us allowing them to compete here. That goes for any athlete that’s on any medication that could result in a positive toxicology test revealing abuse,”

“Our people review it and if there is any alternative benefit then that question will also get asked. But, from what I understand, even if you’re on testosterone therapy you would not have elevated testosterone.

“And it has to be approved. Let me remind you again: we have to clear it. We need to get necessary documentation from a physician saying why you’re on this medication, ‘these are the treatments that we’ve attempted and it hasn’t worked or it has.’

“Then we forward that information to our ring-side physician for review. If our physician agrees with their doctor then as long as they don’t test outside of a particular range they are fine.”

Soonen is set to answer all charges against him on December 2nd and had hoped that because he’d apparently made the same commission aware of the treatment before his UFC 104 bout with Yushin Okami in October 2009 that he’d be able to get away with it on a technicality. Better luck next time Chael…

UFC 127 – Michael Bisping and Jorge Rivera verbally agree to meet on February 27th in Sydney, Australia

The UFC middleweight duo of Michael Bisping and Jorge Rivera have verbally agreed to meet at UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia, this week with the fight likely to serve as the co-main event of the evening.

MMABay.co.uk was the first to report that agreements were in place on both sides after speaking to sources close to both fighters last weekend.

Bisping has put together back-to-back wins inside the octagon after the disappointment of being edged out by Wanderlei Silva on his last trip to Australia, defeating Dan Miller and Yoshihiro Akiyama via unanimous decision.

Rivera has racked up three straight wins inside the octagon and most recently knocked out Nate Quarry at UFC Fight Night 21 in March. The thirty-eight-year-old also defeated Rob Kimmons and Nissen Osterneck. He had hoped to make it four in a row last night before Sakara pulled out through injury.

FOLLOWING LOSS TO MAIQUEL FALCAO, MIDDLEWEIGHT GERALD HARRIS RELEASED FROM UFC

On Monday night, Middleweight contender Gerald Harris (17-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) told MMAjunkie.com Radio that he was happy to still have a job with the UFC. On Tuesday, he found out he doesn't.
Sources close to Harris informed us that the two-time "Knockout of the Night" winner and former cast member of "The Ultimate Fighter 7" has been released from the world's biggest mixed martial arts promotion. When contacted by us, Harris also confirmed his release but declined to comment on the matter at this time.

Harris has been at the center of controversy after narrowly avoiding a first-round submission loss to Maiquel Falcao at this past weekend's UFC 123 event, which took place at The Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit and aired on Pay-Per-View. The opening frame appears to have been cut short by approximately seven seconds due to a timekeeping error, and Harris appeared within a fraction of that of being rendered unconscious by a deep rear-naked choke. But Harris supporters also point to Falcao's refusal to immediately release the choke as a reason "Hurricane" wasn't able to compete effectively in the final two frames. The pace slowed in the final 10 minutes of the fight, and the fighters were booed throughout the third round for their passivity.

UFC President Dana White was openly critical of both fighters at the evening's post-event press conference. The feedback enraged many Falcao supporters who believe their fighter was robbed of a first-round submission win. Today, White told us that the Brazilian contingent could take solace in the face that Falcao would eventually return to the Octagon with another chance to prove himself deserving of the tag "UFC fighter".

"Their guy is going to stick around," White said in regards to the angered Falcao supporters. "Gerald Harris isn't".

Harris began his association with the UFC as a member of "The Ultimate Fighter 7". He defeated Mike Marrello to enter the "TUF" house but was then defeated by eventual season winner Amir Sadollah in the very next round. Harris went on to win six fights outside of the UFC before receiving an official invitation to the promotion following a phone call to White while he was a guest on MMAjunkie.com Radio.

Harris debuted for the UFC in January 2010 with a "Knockout of the Night" win over John Salter. He would go on to notch a TKO win over Mario Miranda, as well as another "Knockout of the Night" win over Dave Branch at July's UFC 116 that received heavy play on ESPN as one of SportsCenter's "Top Plays". The loss to Falcao snapped an official 10-fight win streak for Harris. While Harris' release will likely prove unpopular with many MMA fans, White recently explained the promotion's sometimes aggressive roster moves are no different than any other professional sport.

"These are the big-leagues, man," White said. "It's no different than Major League Baseball, no different than the NFL. You perform, or you go away. I'd rather have two guys in a dog fight and have a guy lose and keep him around than have a guy who's in the Ultimate Staring Competition for five minutes. Nobody wants to see that [expletive]."

Roster spots in all division will continue to remain at a premium in coming months as the UFC absorbs its sister company, the WEC, and the new-look promotion looks to effectively balance its burgeoning list of athletes under contract.

FOLLOWING LOSS TO MAIQUEL FALCAO, MIDDLEWEIGHT GERALD HARRIS RELEASED FROM UFC

"These are the big-leagues, man," White said. "It's no different than Major League Baseball, no different than the NFL. You perform, or you go away. I'd rather have two guys in a dog fight and have a guy lose and keep him around than have a guy who's in the Ultimate Staring Competition for five minutes. Nobody wants to see that [expletive]."

Jean Claude Van Damme to fight in K-1 next year

When people hear the name Jean Claude Van Damme, most associate it with the legendary movie Bloodsport or him getting knocked out by Chuck Zito. Few—if any—think of him as a martial artist with a black belt in Shotokan karate and a professioal kickboxing record of 20-2.

The former Hollywood star who made a name for himself in a variety of action movies has long since seen the inside of a ring—at least not for competitive reasons.

But recently the 50-year-old former kickboxer and action star announced that in 2011 he will return to the ring to fight a professional fight. He will be going to battle in K-1 against Somluck Kansing, a two-time Olympic gold medal boxer.

What could Jean Claude Van Damme possibly have to prove after all these years out of commission for professionally fighting? A publicity stunt to promote an upcoming movie?

Not according to him. In his fight announcement, he stated, "I fell down rock bottom in my life, and I have that spot following me. The only way to convince people add also forgive myself to all those chilren with their posters for (Kickboxer) and their father telling them 'he's (Jean Claude Van Damme) a great guy and you should train like him, and then I f$%* up my life. I want to go back into that ring and to prove to those children that they'll fight in my heart, and it'll be a gret fight."

This announcement brought the former Bloodsport and Kickboxer star to tears. Although it may be a mid-life crisis Jean Claude is going through, I am quite positive that anybody who grew up watching his actions movies will watch when he steps into the K-1 ring.

So what is going on in the universe? Steven Seagal is training UFC fighters and Jean Claude Van Damme is training for a K-1 fight...so what's next? Chuck Norris agreeing to fight Jackie Chan in a bare knuckle brawl? Ah, one can only dream!
